NATURAL SYSTEMS UTILITIES

Partners

Alliance Environmental is a collaborative of engineers, scientists, and planners with broad-based experience in environmental engineering and sustainability consulting. The Alliance team specializes in analysis and design services, as well as implementation of integrated systems and sustainable solutions, for both the built and natural environments. Alliance Environmental pioneered the concept of community on-site wastewater systems in the United States, developed the first water reuse systems in the Northeast region, and helped establish the first non-potable water reuse supply utility in New York City.

Biological Capital (BLC) is a creative team of seasoned entrepreneurs, strategic investors, and conservation experts whose vision is to generate significant long-term investment returns with environmental and social co-benefits. BLC develops landscape-scale ventures by leveraging its broad capital market relationships, sustainable development experience, and conservation partnerships. BLC’s owners and principals have long track records as successful business innovators: they have developed real estate holdings valued in excess of $2 billion, and have executed multimillion-dollar conservation initiatives. BLC’s integrated, whole-systems investment approach mitigates risk, maximizes environmental value, and multiplies returns.

Bioregen Systems is a sustainable wastewater company that provides final treatment and disposal solutions for wastewater facility by-products — the bio-solids known as septage and sewage sludge. Bioregen’s patented process has been developed primarily to treat septage, the organic waste generated by the 30 million households that use septic tanks or small on-site treatment systems rather than connect to a central sewer grid. Septage and sludge is highly environmentally problematic and costly for local communities and their governments. Bioregen constructs “natural systems” that convert septage (an organic wastewater stream) into high-value agricultural products using patented biological processes.

EcoCheck is a leader in the management and operation of decentralized water and wastewater systems. EcoCheck currently manages more than 85 decentralized treatment systems across several states, making it the largest operator of cold-climate treatment wetland systems in the United States. EcoCheck’s clients include homeowners associations, local governmental units, and residential developers and resort facilities. EcoCheck has earned multiple awards for exemplary wastewater operation and management services of decentralized facilities.

Natural Systems International is a leader in applied biotechnology and ecological engineering. The firm was founded with the mission of applying holistic ecological solutions to the problems that arise from the human uses of water. NSI works with integrated design teams to provide progressive options for water master planning, wastewater treatment and reuse, stormwater management, potable and non-potable water supply, and watershed restoration. Since 1989, NSI has designed, prepared studies, specified and/or observed construction on more than 500 ecological engineering projects.

Naturally Wallace Consulting Consulting (formerly North American Wetlands Engineering (NAWE) is a leader in the decentralized water and wastewater industry, providing innovative and ecological solutions for industrial, residential, and municipal clients. Naturally Wallace Consulting (NWC) is internationally recognized for developing innovative and sustainable environmental solutions. NWC has extensive experience in the design, construction, and operation of constructed wetland treatment systems, which provide high-performing, low-cost, ecologically-based wastewater solutions. NWC’s principals have more breadth and depth of experience in decentralized wastewater and water management than any other engineering firm in the country, having been involved in more than 250 projects throughout the world.

Speck & Associates is a private consultancy headed by Jeff Speck, who also serves as NSU’s Chief Planning Advisor. Mr. Speck is a city planner and architectural designer who, through writing, lectures, and built work, advocates internationally for smart-growth and sustainable design.

World Institute for Natural Systems (WINS) promotes the role of natural processes and systems — the inter-related ecologies of our biosphere — in sustainable development to address human needs. WINS seeks to understand the ingenuity and wisdom that have evolved in nature. They apply these principals toward the optimal management of natural resources and their connected water, energy, land, and agricultural systems. WINS supports research and development of new approaches and technologies, policy research and advocacy, professional development and capacity building, and public education and outreach.
